Treatments

More About the Evidence-Based Treatments We Offer

Select a treatment to learn what it is and who it helps most.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
Ages 3 to 21

An evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents, along with their caregivers, that addresses the emotional toll of traumatic experiences.

Parent-Child CARE (PC-CARE)
Ages 1 to 12

A short-term dyadic intervention designed to help the caregiver and child find the best strategies for strengthening their relationship and managing behavior effectively. There are 7 weekly sessions, including an assessment. Caregivers and children learn new skills each week and are then coached to use them during play.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
Ages 2 to 8

An intensive, evidence-based intervention for severe child behavior problems. Parents learn specific behavior management skills in a teaching session, then are coached weekly to reduce problematic behaviors. Best for caregivers who can commit to long-term services.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Ages 12 to 21

A structured, evidence-based program that addresses emotional dysregulation, mood disorders and self-harm. It incorporates mindfulness, acceptance and change, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. In some cases it can benefit children as young as 8.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

A structured, goal-oriented intervention that reduces symptoms by challenging unhelpful ways of thinking and strengthening emotion regulation. Useful for many concerns, including depression and anxiety. Our clinicians have specific expertise in CBT for Chronic Pain and CBT for Anxiety and Depression.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Adolescents & adults

An empirically based approach that helps people accept their thoughts and emotions, choose a valued direction and take action. Best for adolescents and adults, and in some cases beneficial for children 5 and up.

Common Questions When Getting Started With Therapy

How do I know if my child or teen needs therapy?

Recognizing if your child may benefit from therapy can be challenging. Look out for persistent sadness, anxiety, anger issues, difficulty coping with stress, changes in behavior or mood, social withdrawal, academic struggles, or traumatic experiences. If you notice any of these affecting your child's daily life or functioning, it may help to consult a child therapist.

What types of issues does therapy address?

Therapy can address a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, behavioral problems, ADHD, symptoms related to autism, adjustment issues related to divorce or moving to a new school, bullying, peer relationship difficulties, self-esteem issues and academic challenges.

How long does therapy typically last?

Duration varies with the needs and progress of each child, teen or family. Some see significant improvement in a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term therapy. Your therapist will work with you to determine the appropriate duration and frequency based on specific needs and goals.

Will I need to be involved in my child's treatment?

Yes! Parental involvement is often an essential component of child therapy, especially for younger children. Therapists may meet with parents separately to gather information, offer guidance on parenting strategies and discuss progress. Parents are also encouraged to use therapeutic techniques at home and provide ongoing support.

Is my child's treatment confidential?

Confidentiality is a fundamental principle in therapy, including child therapy, with some limits when there are concerns about a child's safety or well-being. Therapists are mandated reporters and may need to disclose information to appropriate authorities in cases of suspected child abuse, neglect, or risk of harm to the child or others. Therapists may also involve parents or caregivers as needed to support progress.

How can I prepare my child or teen for therapy?

Create a positive, supportive environment where they feel comfortable expressing themselves. Talk about the purpose of therapy, reassure them it's okay to talk about feelings and answer their questions. Familiarizing them with the therapist and what to expect in sessions can help them feel more at ease.

What if my child is resistant to therapy?

It's not uncommon for children to feel hesitant, especially if they're unsure or anxious about the process. Validate their feelings while gently encouraging them to give therapy a try. Emphasize the benefits, reassure them the therapist is there to help and offer your support. If they continue to resist, we can discuss alternative approaches or involve them in decisions to address their concerns.

Frequently asked questions

Therapy at Red Leaf Psychology FAQ

Where do you provide services?

Therapy is provided at our centrally located Sacramento office, 225 30th Street, Suite 305, or on a secure telehealth link sent via your client portal.

Some services (e.g., PC-CARE, PCIT) can be provided in home on a case-by-case basis with an additional fee for travel reimbursement.

Does Red Leaf accept insurance?

Right now, Red Leaf Psychology does not accept insurance and is considered an Out of Network provider. Depending on your plan, you may be eligible for full or partial reimbursement of fees paid to an Out of Network provider.

We can provide a monthly statement (a "Super Bill") to submit to your health insurance provider or health savings account. If you plan to use insurance, contact your carrier before your intake session and ask about your therapy benefits.

What is the No Surprises Act?

The No Surprises Act is a federal law that shields you from surprise medical bills, especially those resulting from out-of-network care, emergency services and certain medical procedures. At Red Leaf, we prioritize clear communication about fees, insurance coverage and potential out-of-pocket expenses.

What this means for you:

  • Predictable billing: transparent, upfront communication about the cost of your sessions.
  • Protection from surprise bills: no unexpected bills for out-of-network services or emergency care.
  • Continued quality care: our commitment to high-quality care remains unwavering.
What if I can't make it to my appointment?

We understand that life gets busy. Consistent attendance is vital to your progress, and missed appointments can disrupt the therapeutic process. If you need to miss an appointment, please give your therapist at least 24 hours' notice. Right now we do not charge for appointments cancelled or rescheduled with 24 hours' notice.
