Common questions
when getting
started with therapy

Recognizing if your child may benefit from therapy can sometimes be challenging. Look out for signs such as persistent sadness, anxiety, anger issues, difficulty coping with stress, changes in behavior or mood, social withdrawal, academic struggles, or traumatic experiences. If you notice any of these signs impacting your child’s daily life or functioning, it may be beneficial to consult with a child therapist.

Therapy can address a wide range of issues including but not limited to anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, behavioral problems, ADHD, symptoms related to autism, adjustment issues related to divorce or moving to a new school, bullying, peer relationship difficulties, self-esteem issues, and academic challenges.

The duration of therapy varies depending on the individual needs and progress of each child, teen or family. Some may see significant improvement in a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy. The therapist will work collaboratively with you and your child to determine the appropriate duration and frequency of sessions based on your child’s specific needs and goals.

Yes! Parental involvement is often an essential component of child therapy, especially for younger children. Therapists may meet with parents separately to gather information, provide guidance on parenting strategies, and discuss progress. Additionally, parents are encouraged to actively participate in their child’s therapy process by implementing therapeutic techniques at home and providing ongoing support.

Confidentiality is a fundamental principle in therapy, including child therapy. However, there are some limitations to confidentiality, especially when there are concerns about the child’s safety or well-being. Therapists are mandated reporters and may need to disclose information to appropriate authorities in cases of suspected child abuse, neglect, or if there is a risk of harm to the child or others. Additionally, therapists may involve parents or caregivers in the therapeutic process as needed to support the child’s progress.

Preparing your child for therapy involves creating a positive and supportive environment where they feel comfortable expressing themselves. You can talk to your child about the purpose of therapy, reassure them that it’s okay to talk about their feelings, and answer any questions they may have. Additionally, you can help your child feel more at ease by familiarizing them with the therapist and discussing what to expect during sessions.

It’s not uncommon for children to feel hesitant or resistant about attending therapy, especially if they are unsure or anxious about the process. It’s essential to validate your child’s feelings and concerns while gently encouraging them to give therapy a try. You can emphasize the benefits of therapy, reassure them that the therapist is there to help, and offer your support throughout the process. If your child continues to resist therapy, you can discuss alternative approaches or involve them in the decision-making process to address their concerns.

Red Leaf Psychology can provide you with you with a monthly statement (e.g., a Super Bill) to submit to your health insurance provider or a health savings account. The No Surprises Act is a federal law that ensures you are shielded from surprise medical bills, especially those resulting from out-of-network care, emergency services, and certain medical procedures. This legislation is meant to provide you with peace of mind, knowing that your financial well-being is safeguarded while you focus on your mental health journey.

At Red Leaf, we prioritize clear communication about fees, insurance coverage, and any potential out-of-pocket expenses. With the No Surprises Act, we reinforce our commitment to transparency by ensuring that you are fully aware of the costs associated with your therapy sessions.

What does this mean for you?

  • Predictable Billing: You can expect transparent and upfront communication regarding the cost of your therapy sessions.
  • Protection from Surprise Bills: You are protected from receiving unexpected bills for out-of-network services or emergency care. Your focus can solely be on your mental health journey without worrying about financial surprises.
  • Continued Quality Care: Our commitment to providing high-quality care remains unwavering. The No Surprises Act enhances our ability to serve you by removing financial barriers and ensuring a seamless therapeutic experience.

At Red Leaf, we understand that life can get busy, and unexpected circumstances may arise. However, consistent attendance to therapy appointments is vital for your progress and overall well-being. Missing appointments can disrupt the therapeutic process and hinder the achievement of your goals.

But-if you need to miss an appointment, we ask that you give your therapist or service provider at least 24 hours advanced notice. Right now we do not charge for missed appointments cancelled or rescheduled with a 24 hour notice.
