PC-CARE Training at Red Leaf Psychology

Thank you for your interest in PC-CARE Training at Red Leaf Psychology!

What is PC-CARE?

Parent-Child Care (PC-CARE) is a 6 session dyadic treatment program for families that are interested in improving caregiver-child relationships and are willing to learn new child behavior management strategies.

What does PC-CARE look like?

In one hour weekly sessions, caregivers and children are *briefly* taught (10 minutes) new behavior strategies together and then coached live in the moment during play on how to use those strategies.

Who is PC-CARE for?

PC-CARE is for children ages birth to 12 who may have experienced a traumatic event, or are experiencing difficulties maybe in a new home or school, or just having some difficulties with defiance and disruptive behaviors.

PC-CARE is also for any caregiver that is motivated to improve their relationship with their child and to learn new caregiving skills.

Why PC-CARE?

PC-CARE is not just another behavior intervention; it’s a game-changer. Developed by leading experts in child psychology at UC Davis in 2016, PC-CARE aims to enhance family relationships, promote child well-being, and create lasting positive change by teaching strategies to both parents and children together.

Since its inception, PC-CARE providers consistently report families completing PC-CARE at record rates. Parents and caregivers report feeling more confident and competent to manage difficult situations and every day life with their child. Children also regularly report enjoying playing with their parents and learning new skills!

PC-CARE Training Model at
Red Leaf

We use the UC Davis
competency based
model

Before seeing clients, you will participate in a 6 hour training day (often split between 2 days) offered either in person or online.

During this foundational training, you will learn:

  • Learn how to conduct the pre-treatment session and review a sample case
  • Learn and practice PC-CARE coding
  • Learn how to conduct 10 min. didactics
  • Learn about child development and working with 1 to 10 year old population

After the foundational skill building training and before starting clients, we offer online or in person training sessions where we review each PC-CARE session in small cohorts. We offer in-depth consultation and training in understanding how to conduct each session, learn how to code observations and specific case conceptualization.

Once you are ready to start seeing clients, you will be matched with one of our expert trainers for your individual case preparation and video review for competency.

We provide technical assistance to ensure you are prepared to record your sessions.

You will be given access to case example videos, resources and other tools to set you up for success as you start working with clients.

You will meet with your trainer for a preparatory session before your client session to review competency requirements and plan for client specifics.

Once sessions are complete, you will upload sessions to a secure and confidential server and reviewed by your trainers to determine competency completion and provided with specific client feedback.
